Working life policy, inclusive working life and why high labor force participation matters

It is not only in terms of wages and collective bargaining that we have tripartite cooperation in Norway. The organizations work together with the current government in the Working Life and Pensions Policy Council. The agreement on a more inclusive working life, called the IA agreement, is something that the working life organizations and the state have agreed on. This agreement is further developed and renegotiated at regular intervals. Inclusive working life is about creating a working life where everyone has a place, though, among other things, preventing sickness absence.

Women’s participation in working life, which exploded in the 1970s, has had an impact on the development of the welfare state. Through higher labor force participation and thus higher tax revenues, the development of the welfare offer has become possible.

To reflect upon:

  • In your view, why is it important to have an IA agreement?
  • Have you heard about the IA- agreement at your workplace?
